Summer 11 plus intensive revision course and GCSE Results!
We are almost at the end of our final summer course where children are preparing for the 11 plus entrance exams.
Our courses are very intensive so the great weather is a blessing. Children have been able to play for a short time between papers and, thus, manage the 6 hour working day with ease!
Each child works to improve their scores from one day to the next. Each evening they decide which topics trouble them and post that on the board each morning so it is covered in class along with the new material they need to know for the exams.
We have papers in all the subject areas, (Maths, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning) each day, and today we start the mock exams. We use unique materials for the exams and and are administered in a way that is similar to some of the schools' real tests- excellent practice for the children!!
Once again, the children attending have made many new friends. We have been delighted with the excellent progress made by each child.
Our next course is in October (29th 30th and 31st,) the first 3 days of half term. This will run from 9.30am-3.30pm each day and is half- full at present so do book soon if a place is required.
All the subject areas are covered on each course and we run courses in each holiday period except Christmas.
GCSE results are out today! Media are, as usual, discussing new ideas that will concentrate on exams rather than coursework. I found that hardworking children who found it hard to understand exam questions under pressure produced excellent coursework because I could explain the question which they then did the work for. So it depends whether we are interested in educating children properly or just mugging things up for exams and just showing who has good memory under pressure.
However, of course, it is also true that, as with university course work, younger children can also get others to help with course work and find answers to problems on the internet. Exams solve this problem as they do ensure it is all children's own work. As with most things there are always two sides to everything!
If you need any help or advice about your GCSE results then we would urge you to email or call us and, as qualified teachers with years of experience, we can help you with whatever questions or issues that you may have!

EPSOM AND EWELL FUN DAY!
Next week sees the start of our much anticipated August 11 plus intensive course. As usual this particular course is always fully booked. We are also running a new 11 plus intensive course in October due to the popularity of these very successful courses. I am particularly looking forward to next week as our last course was such good fun!
Speaking of fun, it is with great pleasure that Southern Tutors is sponsoring the Epsom and Ewell Borough Fun Day on Saturday 29th September at Hook Road Arena. Southern Tutors is always heavily involved in local community fundraising events and this event celebrating 75 years of the Borough of Epsom and Ewell is no exception!
Programmes with tickets can be purchased in advance at Epsom Playhouse, Ebbisham Centre or Bourne Hall. Tickets are also available on the day at the gate. I look forward to seeing you there!

Southern Tutors' Charity Football Match
After several months of organising the Southern Tutor's inaugural Charity Football Match was a huge success!
Five teams from around the county came together on a lovely Sunday in July to raise money for Epsom Hospital's charity, Epsom Medical Equipment Fund, and Riding for the Disabled.
We even had celebrity footballer AFC Wimbledon's Jack Midson who very kindly donated his time to referee for the day! Our own Member of Parliament for Epsom and Ewell, Chris Grayling, came to present the Grayling Shield to the winning team.
There were stalls selling cakes and raffles with wonderful prizes all helping to raise money for the chosen charities.
The five-a-side tournament, organised by Southern Tutors and run by helpers from Epsom Labour, Epsom Conservatives and Walton on the Hill Lib Dems, took place at St Martin's Junior School in Epsom and raised £218 for two local charities.
Two teams from Epsom Hospital faced teams of Labour and Conservative activists, as well as the eventual winners Walton Warriors who had come together especially to raise money for local causes. In the showcase political battle a 3-1 Labour lead was cancelled out by the Conservatives as they battled back to 3-3 with a last-minute goal.
In the final Walton Warriors gained a narrow victory over the Hospital B side to take home the Chris Grayling Shield, which was presented by local MP Chris Grayling and guest referee Jack Midson. The AFC Wimbledon striker was happy to be the referee for the day; taking to Twitter following the tournament to tell his followers how enjoyable the afternoon had been.
Next year we hope to raise even more money for our local charities, Epsom Medical Equipment Fund and Riding for the Disabled. We hope that you will be there to enjoy it with us.

20 mile charity walk for Epsom Hospital!
On the 12th of May 2012 I will be walking 20 miles around the borough for Epsom Hospital's charity, Epsom Medical Equipment Fund. This was the hospital where I was born and also had my first work experience at the tender age of 14!
For the last ten years, Epsom Hospital has been under attack from cuts and we have been striving as a community to protect it. I would be very grateful to anyone who would be able to sponsor me in this endeavour. Thank you in anticipation!
